About this work
Montrouge - 1948 shows a painted surface built from broad strokes and soft colour shifts. The work fits the abstract painting practice Bram van Velde kept through the mid twentieth century. Shapes gather and break apart without a clear subject.
The paper is matte, so the paint tones stay flat and the small passages of colour read without glare. A fine art print of this kind hangs at shoulder height on a wall that gets even indoor light. The frame finish can match the room.
It works in a hallway at the end of the passage, where the painted layers catch the light from a ceiling lamp and the darker tones stay quiet as you walk past.
