About this work
Nature morte - 1952 by Nicolas de Stael rests on the sheet with heavy blocks of paint. The surface holds a few stacked planes set near each other. Brushwork lays down broad strokes that sit next to smoother patches. This still life keeps its shapes close together and leaves open ground around them.
The fine art print sits on a wall at shoulder height where a lamp casts a soft glow. A dark frame on a pale wall lets the paint blocks stand apart. The matte surface keeps the tones even without shine. You notice the brush marks more when you stand close.
A hallway with a wooden bench and a narrow lamp shows the print at the end of the passage. The paint blocks read clearly at that distance. From the kitchen door you catch the heavier shapes first.
