About this work
Magenta, black and green sit on an orange ground in No.3No.13 Magenta, Black, Green on Orange - 1949. Broad horizontal colour bands cover the sheet, with the tones shifting as they cross. The painting belongs to the colour field work Mark Rothko built through the late nineteen forties and onward.
The fine art print keeps the flat colour areas without shine. A light frame on a dark wall lets the orange ground read clearly. The same frame beside wooden furniture follows the room instead of standing apart.
You see the bands from the doorway of a dining room. The orange ground holds the eye first, then the green band moves across. At the table you notice the black band sits lower.
