About this work
No. 46 Black, Ochre, Red Over Red - 1957 shows three deep colour planes set one over the other. The top band holds black and a bit of ochre, the middle red runs across, and a red layer sits below. The painted edges blur where the fields meet.
The fine art print goes straight onto a nail. Mark Rothko built these stacked fields with thin washes of paint. The white frame gives the picture a clean edge on the wall. It keeps the colour bands separate and makes the soft outlines easier to see.
The black frame finishes the same dark note that runs through the top field. It also makes the ochre tone stand out a little more against the white mat. A reading corner works because the colours do not pull the eye around.
