About this work
The numbers one through nine sit in stacked rows on a plain field. Each numeral uses a different bold colour against the background. Robert Indiana painted these stacked numbers as part of his pop art practice, turning digits into repeated shapes.
The print uses matte fine art paper so the bright colours stay flat and do not shine under a lamp. A dark frame on a pale wall makes the coloured numbers stand out, while a light frame on a dark wall keeps the room calm.
It fits above a desk in a study, where the rows of digits draw the eye from the doorway. You notice the bright colours first, then the plain background behind them.
