About this work
A soft pink shape sits on a pale ground in Pink Bird Figure I, 1961-. The form reads like a bird seen from the side, with a wing that drifts up and out.
You get the fine art print with a hanger already on the back. The painted area is thin, and the edge of the shape loses itself into the paper. Helen Frankenthaler worked in this open colour field style, laying colour on unprimed paper so the ground and the paint meet without a hard border.
A black frame gives the sheet a clear line on the wall. The frame edge sits close to the painted shape and keeps the eye inside the picture. You notice it above a desk near a window, where the pink stays calm in the morning light.
