Helen Frankenthaler worked with stained colour in the colour field painting movement, letting the wash settle into the ground instead of sitting on top.

It works on the wall above a dining table. From the far end of the table you see the broad pink band and the soft edges. Closer to the wall the thin ground shows through the pink paint.
