Pygmalion

Pygmalion - 1979 opens on a sheet of cream where a soft grey sweep crosses from left to right. A few thinner marks rest behind the main line, leaving most of the ground open. Norman Bluhm often built his canvases from loose strokes and a painted ground, so the eye settles on that single broad movement.

This is a fine art print set in a frame with a back panel. The matte surface holds the light greys without shine, and the assembled frame keeps the sheet flat against the wall.

Above a desk in a study, the broad line reads first. From the doorway you see the simple shape, and closer up the thinner marks give the sheet some breathing room.
