Red — Fine Art

Red - 1968 hangs on the sheet with a wide red field that sits over a darker band below it. The two blocks meet where their edges blur into one another. Mark Rothko worked in this way, aiming for colour to feel present rather than painted.

A fine art frame in white, wood, dark wood or black gives the sheet a clear border on the wall. Choose black for a sharp line that sits close to the red, or white when you want the edge to step back.

It works above a desk in a study where the light comes from a lamp on the left. From that angle the red field looks warm and the lower band stays quiet. You notice the blur between the two tones before you see the frame.
