About this work
Relief in Orange and Blue - 1956 shows two broad colour areas meeting in the middle. The orange field and the blue field sit side by side without blending. The surface keeps a flat look, as if two blocks of tone were set next to each other.
The fine art print goes straight onto a nail. The white frame gives the picture a clean edge. That edge holds the orange and blue apart from the wall and from each other. A wood frame would darken the scene, and a dark wood frame would pull the orange forward.
On a dining room wall, the two colour blocks read from the table. You notice the hard line between them first, then the even tone of each side. The print sits above the sideboard, where the room light does not wash it out.
