About this work
Salmon Waters, Ireland is a 1926 painting by the American artist Rockwell Kent, made during the months he spent in County Donegal on the northwest coast of Ireland. Kent went to Ireland looking for remote, quiet places, and the rugged land and open water of Donegal shaped much of the work he made there.
The painting shows the kind of scene Kent loved most: wild water, wide sky and a landscape untouched by crowds. His style is clear and bold, with strong shapes, calm light and a sense of stillness that makes the place feel both real and timeless.
Kent was a painter, printmaker, illustrator and traveler who spent his life seeking out the far edges of the world, from Alaska to Greenland to the Irish coast. Salmon Waters, Ireland captures that spirit, a love of nature in its most open and honest form.
