About this work
Shoes 1968 shows a pair of worn shoes set on a plain painted ground. The paint is applied in broad strokes with visible edges and uneven colour. Philip Guston built this kind of image from rough brushwork and everyday objects, so the shoes read as both a simple still life and a blunt painted shape.
This fine art print arrives ready to hang. A metal hanger is fitted to the back, so it takes a nail or a screw without any separate frame. You put it up and leave it there.
In a stairwell with low overhead light, the shoes appear as two dark forms against the painted ground. From the bottom step you see the full pair, and near the landing you notice the uneven edges of the paint. The view changes as you move up the stairs.
