About this work
Thick black lines and rough white patches fill Site Inhabited by Objects 1965. The marks press hard into the paper and leave a rough edge. Jean Dubuffet laid these shapes down in a free motion, with paint that sits on top of the surface.
A fine art print set in a frame with a back panel holds these marks flat and steady. The matte paper keeps the white patches soft and stops the black lines from shining under a lamp. When the ready to hang option is used, the frame arrives assembled and sits flush against the wall.
On a narrow landing wall, the black lines read as solid bars and the white patches feel open. From the bottom step you see the crowded shapes, and from the top you notice the rough edges on each mark.
