Sketchy Cobaltic Blue Flag - 2009 uses a single blue band laid over a white ground with loose pencil strokes at the edges. The shape reads as a flag seen from a distance, though the drawing keeps the outline open. Ralston Crawford worked with industrial forms and measured colour areas throughout his career.

The fine art frame can follow the room, a light frame on a dark wall or a wood frame beside timber furniture. The matte surface keeps the blue from shining under a lamp and lets the pencil marks stay soft.

It hangs on the stairwell wall near the turning step, where the light comes from one side. From the landing you see the blue shape first, then the pencil lines as you pass by.
