Souvenir — Fine Art

The title Souvenir points to a small keepsake or memory. For the picture, Cy Twombly uses the familiar mix of pencil lines and dark washes that runs through his practice. The marks sit on the sheet without a clear scene, and the writing-like signs stay loose.

The fine art print sits on matte paper, so the soft greys do not shine under a lamp. A light frame on a dark wall lets the broad tone hold the space, while a wood frame beside wooden furniture keeps the marks in view.

In a hallway with a single bulb overhead, the pencil signs read as a quick note left on the wall. From the stair landing you notice the scribble shapes first, then the blank ground around them.
