Spirit Night — Fine Art

Spirit Night - 18.06.98 - 1998 opens on a dark ground with pools of blue and green that press against each other. The paint carries rough edges and small breaks where the ground shows through.

You can see the slow build of layers across the field. John Hoyland builds his colour field painting with broad strokes and a worked surface.

The fine art print keeps those edges sharp on matte paper so the blues do not turn glossy. It hangs on a pale wall above a short bookshelf, and the dark tones stand out from where you stand at the side of the room.
