Springscape — Fine Art

Springscape - 1975 opens with a pale sheet and thin washes of colour that spread into the surface. The marks feel quick and loose, as if the brush moved with a light touch and stopped where the paint ran out. Helen Frankenthaler worked in this way, letting thin paint settle into the sheet.

It works on a hallway wall where the day light moves across the floor. From the far end you notice the thin colour bands first, and close up the small shifts in pressure show where the brush paused.
