About this work
Springtime in Washington 1971 shows a field of small painted marks set in bands across the sheet. Alma Woodsey Thomas used short strokes and colour blocks in her abstract expressionist work. The bands move left to right with warm tones near the top and cool tones below.
The image arrives as a fine art print set in a frame with a back panel. A matte surface keeps the soft tones quiet under indoor light. The frame hides the raw edge of the paper so the bands read cleanly from the door.
In a hallway the shapes hold together from the bend in the stairs. Up near the landing the small strokes show more than the bands, and the cool tones below stay flat on the plaster wall.
