About this work
Steel Fish 1934 shows a painted metal shape that bends like a fish skeleton. The piece uses the flat painted form and thin wire line that Alexander Calder used across his sculpture practice. You can read it as a mobile idea held still on paper.
The fine art print sits on a matte sheet so the painted tones stay soft without a shine. A light frame on a dark wall makes the metal feel separate from the paint. A dark frame on a pale wall does the opposite and keeps the form readable.
A reading corner with a lamp at shoulder height lets you follow the wire curve and the painted stroke. From the seat you notice the open space between the form and the ground.
