Still Life

Still Life with French Novels and Rose shows two bound books laid on their sides with a single rose and a few petals beside them. The pages edge toward a warm background while the flower keeps a darker ring around its centre.

Vincent van Gogh worked in short paint strokes and used colour in blocks. The fine art paper holds the paint marks without a shine under a lamp.

A dark frame on a pale wall keeps the edges quiet. You might hang it on a dining room wall and notice the rose first when you sit at the table.
