About this work
A stitched cover sits on the surface in Stilleben Mit Gestickter Decke 1910. The cloth shows a pattern worked in thread, laid flat against the painted ground. Alexej von Jawlensky often painted still lifes with fabric and plain objects, so the surface reads as a real cloth with drawn lines on top.
This is a fine art print set in a frame with a back panel. The paper takes the thread marks and the coloured areas without gloss, so the stitched pattern stays readable and the flat painted parts do not glare when a lamp is nearby.
On a hall wall near the stairs, the stitched cover catches the light first. From the bottom step you see the woven pattern clearly, and the painted edges stay calm beside the door.
