About this work
Street at Cagnes 1923 places a row of houses against a town sky. The shapes lean and the paint is built up in rough layers that leave the surface uneven. Chaim Soutine worked this way often, building up paint with a heavy hand. Thick strokes gather in the roofs and narrow windows.
This fine art print sits in a frame with a back panel, and the ready to hang option brings it assembled. The frame keeps the rough paint strokes solid on the wall and stops the glossy reflections that would flatten the uneven colour.
In a bedroom, the piece reads as dark blocks from the bed, then the small window shapes come into view when you stand near the dresser. The lean of the houses stays quiet in the morning light.
