About this work
Study for Homage to the Square Beaming 1963 belongs to the geometric colour work of Josef Albers. Four nested rectangles sit inside each other, each a flat colour sitting against the one before. The squares read as a careful colour interaction study from the mid twentieth century practice of the Bauhaus colour theory.
The light frame on a dark wall keeps the bands clear, so the eye moves from one colour to the next without a shine under the lamp. The fine art print on matte paper holds the soft tone shifts and the hard edge colour bands stay sharp in even light.
In a study above a desk, the nested squares sit at a comfortable height, and from the chair you notice the flat colour rings and the way the lighter band meets the darker one beside it.
