About this work
Sweetwater 1959 shows a single word stretched across a plain field of paint. The letters sit in a flat band of tone on the sheet. Edward Ruscha often paints words as if they were signs on a roadside.
The black frame gives the edge of the image a clear stop against the painted field. The matte surface keeps the letter shapes soft without a shine. It fits above a narrow reading desk.
From the chair you see the dark letters first, then the quiet ground behind them. The finish on the frame is white, which keeps the painted band from feeling heavy on the wall. This fine art print reproduces the painted word on paper.
