About this work
Symbol of Flowers - 1951 shows a small field of soft spots and thin strokes. The marks stay close together and read like a quiet study of plant shapes. Forrest Bess worked with oil on board, laying colour in small repeats and leaving raw areas open. The paint looks built up in places and thin in others.
This is a fine art print set in a frame with a back panel. You can hang it ready to hang, so the frame is assembled and the picture is ready on the wall. The matte surface keeps the soft marks from shining under a lamp.
It fits above a kitchen bench. From the cooking area you see the grouped spots and the thinner strokes between them. The small scale of the marks stays clear from that distance.
