About this work
The Acquired Inability to Escape 1991 shows a glass and steel vitrine inside a black box. A single fly sits on one side of the glass. Light comes from above and falls hard on the surface.
This fine art print is ready to hang on arrival. Damien Hirst uses the setup to hold a still moment under glass. The clear sheet separates the fly from the dark space behind it. The work sits inside a steel frame that you can match to the wall.
A dark frame on a pale wall keeps the box sharp and lets the fly stay the centre. You see it best in a hallway with one overhead bulb. From the corridor you read the glass first, the body second, and the fly last.
