About this work
The Gray Tree shows branches drawn in a plain grey against a light ground. Piet Mondrian studied trees before he turned to grids and colour planes. The paint is thin and the lines move from trunk to twig without extra detail. The grey stays flat across each branch.
This fine art print sits inside a white frame. The white edge keeps the grey lines clear from the wall. The frame finish gives the picture a firm line around its edge. A dark wood frame would sit closer to the grey tones.
It fits a hallway wall where morning light falls across the matte paper. From the stair landing you see the branch lines first, then the plain ground. The grey holds back, and the wood floor stays quiet below it.
