About this work
The Guitar 1914 shows a guitar divided into clear planes of colour and thin outlines. The instrument sits inside a flat painted field, built the way Picasso and Braque set up the same kind of picture. Juan Gris worked in this cubist style throughout his career.
This is a fine art print set in a frame with a back panel. The matte paper holds the grey and blue planes without shine, so the outlined edges stay clear when you look straight at it.
It fits on a narrow shelf in a hallway where the light comes from one side. From that spot you notice the broken shape of the guitar first, then the thin lines that cut across the field.
