About this work
The Palace of Westminster 1907 by Andre Derain uses short thick strokes to build the river and the buildings. Strong blue and orange tones press against each other. The paint sits on the surface with a rough rhythm rather than a smooth finish. You can see the quick hand behind each mark.
This is a fine art print set in a frame with a back panel. The matte surface keeps the bright colours from glaring and lets the darker tones stay deep. The frame sits flush against the wall and the back panel holds it steady. You only need to place it on a hook.
Hang it on a narrow landing wall where the stair light hits the blue tones in the morning. From the bottom step you read the river marks first, then the building shapes above them.
