About this work
The Schelde Upstream From Antwerp After Fog 1892 shows the river under a soft grey sky. Water and land blend in calm tones. Theo van Rysselberghe worked in pointillist technique, building forms from small dots of paint.
That method keeps the water quiet and the air heavy. This fine art print carries that same stillness. The frame in white, wood, dark wood or black gives the picture a clear edge.
A white frame lets the pale water stay open. A dark wood frame holds the grey tones together. You notice the river first, then the frame edge, when you stand near the wall in a hallway with one lamp on.
