The Seasons — Fine Art

Lee Krasner painted The Seasons with broad swaths of colour that sit on top of each other. The layers look like soil and leaf shapes mixed together on the sheet. The painting stays open where the paint thins out.

The fine art paper has a matte surface, so the brushstrokes read as flat colour and the edges stay soft. A light frame on a dark wall lets the lighter areas sit forward, and a dark frame on a pale wall keeps the darker bands from fading.

On a hallway wall near the stairs, you see the bigger colour bands first and then the smaller marks between them. The paint looks layered there, with the thicker strokes reading as soil and the thinner ones as leaves.
