About this work
The Spider 1940 shows a thin painted outline that curls and crosses itself on a plain sheet. The form reads like a small creature caught in a single gesture.
Alexander Calder often used wire and paint to make shapes that seem to move on their own. The fine art print sits in a frame with a back panel, so the sheet stays flat and the edges stay even.
The matte surface keeps the painted tones soft and stops glare from a lamp. It works well on a hallway wall beside a narrow staircase. From the bend in the stairs you notice the open curve first, then the small painted spots.
