The Stream Near Nice

The Stream Near Nice by Henri Matisse shows a channel of water with a bank of vegetation on one side. Broad areas of blue and green sit beside each other, with a few darker accents along the water edge.

The painting reads from across the room as a calm horizontal band, and up close you can follow the soft drawn outlines around the leaves. Henri Matisse worked with flat colour areas and firm outlines in this period, and that practice shows here.
