About this work
A single tree sits on the page in The Tree 1951. The trunk rises with a soft black line, and the branches spread into a few green leaves against a pale ground.
The fine art print goes straight onto a nail. This belongs to the late still life and nature studies where Henri Matisse worked with clear outlines and quiet colour. The paper is matte, so the green stays muted and the black line does not shine.
A metal hanger is already fitted to the back, so it goes straight onto a nail or screw without a separate frame. It sits above a long sofa at eye level near a window. From the sofa you see the tree line first, and up close you notice the soft edges of the leaves.
