About this work
The Varangeville Church and the Cliffs by Pierre-Auguste Renoir shows a stone church set against rocky cliffs. Soft greens and pale blues sit against the warm grey of the stone, so the building reads before the sea behind it. Pierre-Auguste Renoir worked in this impressionist style, with broken colour touches that let the air and light shift across the scene.
This is a fine art print set in a frame with a back panel. The matte surface keeps the pale blues and greens soft, and the frame gives the print a solid edge so the church and cliffs hold together as one block.
In a narrow hallway, the print sits above a low bench. From the doorway you see the stone church first, then the cliffs fill the upper half, and the pale sea colour stays quiet at the edges.
