Townscape 1968

Townscape 1968 by Gerhard Richter layers thin paint across a wide ground. Broad strokes sweep the surface in bands of grey and white.

The marks sit on top of each other and the edges stay blurred. Gerhard Richter often works from photographs and uses a squeegee to move the paint. The finish is a fine art print on matte paper.

Light stays soft on the flat areas and the blurred bands keep their grey tone. A dark frame on a pale wall gives the print a clear edge. It fits a stairwell wall where the steps bring you closer and the grey bands read as a quiet horizon.
