About this work
Townscape 1969 shows a built-up place seen from a distance, with blocks and shadows laid out in a soft grey band. The paint looks scraped and blurred at the edges. Gerhard Richter painted from a photograph and pushed the surface until the forms lost their sharp lines.
A fine art print on matte paper keeps the grey tones steady and stops shine under a lamp. The frame can follow the room, a light frame on a dark wall or a wood frame beside wooden furniture.
On a study wall above a desk, the bands read as a quiet city from across the room. From the chair you notice the small scraped marks where one grey meets the next.
