About this work
Townscape Paris 1968 shows a city scene built from soft grey bands and thin lines. The paint moves in broad strokes that leave the shapes slightly blurred. Gerhard Richter worked in a postwar German painting style, often using a photograph based painting method.
This fine art print uses a matte paper sheet so the grey tones stay flat and do not shine under a lamp. A light frame on a dark wall lets the painted bands read clearly, while a dark frame on a pale wall gives the scene more weight.
Hang it on the wall in a study above a desk, where the desk lamp sends warm light across the paper. From the chair you see the broad grey bands, and from the doorway you notice the thin pale lines running through the buildings.
