About this work
Trademark Study 4 1962 by Edward Ruscha turns a common word into a painted mark on a plain ground. The letters hold a steady tone, with edges that do not blur. You notice the slight pull of each stroke as the eye moves across the band.
This fine art piece rests on a matte sheet that keeps the marks readable without a shine under indoor light. A light frame on a dark wall and a dark frame on a pale wall both suit the plain field.
It works on a hallway wall between two doors, where the band reads as one mark at a distance. Closer to the frame you spot the small changes in the letter strokes. The light from a ceiling lamp falls across the surface without glare.
