About this work
Untitled - 1935 shows a bird form held in a dark field of watercolour and ink. The bird stands alone, with a thin outline around a pale body. Morris Graves often painted birds this way, quiet and close to the paper.
The fine art print uses matte paper, so the dark ink and soft washes keep their flat tone without shine. A light frame on a dark wall lets the bird outline read clearly. A dark frame on a pale wall keeps the edges settled.
On a narrow hallway wall, the bird shape sits above eye level, with the dark field filling the space between two doors. From the far end of the hall you see the outline first, then the pale body when you pass by.
