About this work
Untitled - 1940 uses broad painted bands laid one over the other on the sheet. The upper band carries a darker tone, and the lower band holds a softer warm tone. The paint spreads at the edges where the colours meet. This is the kind of colour field painting Mark Rothko made by working directly with paint and tone.
The fine art frame finishes in white, wood, dark wood or black and gives the picture a clear edge on the wall. A black frame sits against the dark band without pulling it apart, while a white frame lets the lighter lower band stay open.
In a narrow hallway, you notice the stacked bands first from the turn, then the small shifts in tone as you pass. The picture keeps its silence there and does not ask for attention.
