About this work
Untitled 1960 by Lee Bontecou puts a deep opening in the middle of the sheet. The opening pulls the eye inward. Around it the surface looks worn and handled, with darker lines circling the edge. Lee Bontecou made this kind of image often, using strong shapes and rough marks to hold attention.
This fine art print sits inside a white frame. The white edge keeps the dark opening clear against the wall. It gives the picture a firm line so the worn marks do not fade into the background. The frame finish is plain and stays out of the way.
In a small kitchen above the sink you notice the dark opening first, then the rough lines around it. Light from the window makes the surface look uneven. From the table you see the whole image settle into the wall.
