Untitled Composition Lembark 285 opens on a loose field where colour spreads sit in broad areas. Sam Francis leaves much of the paper empty between the marks. The eye moves from one soft band to the next. Nothing sits heavy in one corner.

The fine art print uses matte paper so the soft bands keep their flat look and there is no shine under a lamp. A black frame gives the picture a clean edge on the wall. The edge cuts the open field so the image does not drift off the surface.

On a kitchen wall near the sink you see the broad colour areas from a few paces away. The marks read as a simple layout. You notice the gaps between the bands when you stand still and look straight at the surface.
