Untitled EXP SF 56-04

Wide open areas of white lead into soft bands of blue and red that drift across the field in Untitled EXP SF 56-04. The painted washes do not fill the whole surface, so the blank space stays active around the colour.

Sam Francis worked with thin paint and open fields, letting layers stay loose. A fine art print is set in a frame with a back panel.

The paper is matte, so the lighter tones stay flat and there is no shine under a lamp. It sits on a study room wall near a desk lamp. From the chair you notice the open centre first, then the edges of the colour bands as you turn the page.
