Untitled from Michel Waldberg s Posmes dans le ciel shows a pale ground with separate colour washes spread across it. Sam Francis leaves the washes open so the white shows through in uneven patches. The lighter tones sit over the darker ones without covering them fully.

The fine art paper is matte, which keeps the pale tones from reflecting under a lamp. A light frame on a dark wall lets the open field stay clear. The frame finish follows the room, so the picture stays quiet in the room.

It hangs on the dining room wall beside a wooden table. From the far end of the room the broad washes read as soft colour blocks. Up close the small gaps between the washes show the bare paper underneath.
