About this work
Untitled Intaglio - 1956 works in the post war print tradition, where Pierre Soulages used intaglio to press black ink into paper and read the surface through its grooves.
The print shows a broad dark field crossed by thin black lines, built up through pressed marks rather than paint on top. The fine art print keeps those grooves soft, so the lines stay close together when you look at the sheet from a normal distance.
A dark frame sits on a pale bedroom wall, with the picture hanging a little below the top of the bookshelf so the lines settle into the room rather than pull the eye. From the bed you read the narrow marks first, then the quiet dark field behind them.
