Untitled Ocean 1972 — Fine Art

Untitled Ocean 1972 by Vija Celmins shows a calm stretch of water drawn with careful graphite marks. The surface uses small repeated lines and soft shading to suggest waves and depth. The work sits within the artists measured drawing practice and its focus on natural surfaces.

The fine art print sits on a matte sheet so the light greys stay soft and there is no shine under a lamp. A light frame on a dark wall lets the pale water tones stand apart from the background.

It works on a hallway wall at a medium height where you pass by each day. From there the fine art print reads as a quiet band of water with small pencil marks showing in the light.
