About this work
Untitled Verticals and Horizontals - 1970 shows straight black lines set against a pale ground. The vertical strokes and horizontal strokes cross without forming a pattern. Francois Morellet worked with ruler drawn geometry and repeated line marks. The surface stays plain and the marks stay separate.
A fine art print arrives in a frame with a white, wood, dark wood or black finish. The frame gives the picture a clear edge on the wall. The black lines stay sharp against the light ground when the frame edge sits close.
Hang it in a study above a desk. From the chair you notice the crossing lines and the quiet pale tone of the sheet. The black marks read as simple drawn lines on the printed surface.
