About this work
Untitled Warm Painting - 1961 opens on a warm ground with painted shapes that push toward the edges. The eye enters at the lower left and rests on a heavier cluster of colour there. Empty space above gives the marks room to breathe.
The fine art print goes straight onto a nail. Brett Whiteley worked with quick painted gestures and open fields of colour, a way of painting that keeps the surface loose.
The matte paper keeps the warm tones even under bright light, so the painted shapes stay soft instead of shiny. The metal hanger lets the image sit flat against the plaster, which matters for a work built on open colour fields. The print works on the wall beside a reading chair.
