About this work
Violet, Black, Orange, Yellow on White and Red - 1949 sets four stacked colour bands on the sheet. The upper zones run from violet into orange, the lower tones shift toward red and yellow. Mark Rothko built these fields with broad painted layers that soften at the edges.
This fine art print is set in a frame with a back panel. The matte surface keeps the dark bands from reflecting light and lets the orange stay flat. The frame adds a clean edge around the colour fields.
On a bedroom wall near a bedside lamp the violet band reads first, and the yellow band at the bottom stays quiet. From the foot of the bed you see the stacked fields, and the black band stays deep.
